Born in Neiva, Colombia, she began sewing at a young age, developing couture techniques through the vibrant pageant culture of Latin America. Recognized early for her exceptional handwork, she trained in the intricate art of evening gown construction—an experience that continues to define her relationship with fashion.
At 21, Marcela moved to London, where her creative language was refined through design work and her experience as a buyer for luxury boutiques. In 2010, she launched her own brand, later opening her Maison de Couture on Worth Avenue in Palm Beach—an atelier known for made-to-measure precision, privacy, and uncompromising craftsmanship.
Beyond couture, Marcela expanded her vision through The Backroom, a concept store in Bogotá and Miami Beach that champions Colombian and international designers. Guided by a belief that style is a powerful form of self-expression, her work blends craftsmanship, curation, and a deep commitment to empowering women.

1. You learned couture techniques at a very young age. How did that early relationship with hand sewing shape your view of fashion today?
Sewing taught me presence. When you work with your hands, you learn to slow down and truly pay attention—to texture, movement, and feeling. From the very beginning, fashion was never just about clothing for me; it was about care. That sense of intention still defines how I understand luxury today.
2. Latin American pageant culture is expressive and bold. How has that influence stayed with you?
Pageant culture celebrates confidence. It’s about stepping into a room and owning who you are. That spirit shaped my design language. I love creating pieces that allow women to feel powerful without being overwhelming—boldness with elegance, drama softened by grace.

3. Moving to London at 21 was a major turning point. What did that experience give you creatively?
London taught me to trust restraint. It showed me that style doesn’t need to be loud to be impactful. I learned how to balance emotion with clarity, and how to express identity in a more subtle, modern way. It was incredibly formative for me, both as a woman and as a designer.
4. You later worked as a buyer for luxury boutiques. How did that change your relationship with fashion?
It brought me closer to women’s real lives. I saw how clothing functions beyond the runway—what pieces women reach for, what makes them feel confident, and what they keep over time. That experience grounded my creativity in reality and empathy, and it continues to guide my design and curation today.

5. Your Maison de Couture in Palm Beach is known for privacy and precision. Why is made-to-measure so important to you?
Because every woman is different, and beautiful in her own way. Made-to-measure allows fashion to adapt to the woman, not the other way around. It creates trust, comfort, and confidence. That personal connection is where true luxury lives.
6. Your work is recognized for intricate hand details. What do those details mean to you emotionally?
Details are love. They’re where emotion lives. When something is made by hand, you can feel the care behind it. I believe women sense that immediately—it’s what transforms a dress into something meaningful, not just beautiful.

7. With The Backroom, you created a platform for Colombian and international designers. What guides your curation?
I choose pieces that feel authentic. I’m drawn to designers with a clear voice and a strong point of view. Fashion should feel personal and intentional, never forced. When a piece feels honest, women connect with it naturally.
8. Your edit brings together emerging and established designers. How do you create cohesion?
By focusing on emotion rather than trends. I look for pieces that feel current yet timeless—designs women will love season after season. It’s about balance: freshness with depth, innovation with soul.

9. You often speak about fashion as a form of empowerment. What does that mean to you?
Empowerment is feeling comfortable being yourself. Fashion should support that, not distract from it. I want women to feel confident, respected, and seen in what they wear. When clothing allows you to move through the world with ease, that is true power.
10. In a fast-fashion world, how do you personally define luxury today?
Luxury is intention. It’s choosing pieces that mean something, that last, and that reflect who you are. It’s slowing down and dressing with purpose. For me, that is the future of fashion.
